Akılcılık sözcüğünün felsefedeki anlamı, günlük dildeki anlamından farklıdır.Alışılmış anlamda bir akılcı, dinsel konularda ve ahlaksal sorunlarda inanca veya iç-seziye güvenecek veya geleneğin kılavuzluğunu kabul edecek yerde, aklını kullanmakta direnen kişi demektir.Dinsel ve ahlaksal sorunlara aklın uygulanmasının eski inançlar üzerinde çoğu kez çok yıkıcı etkisi olduğundan, 'akılcı' deyimi,bir 'septik'(kuşkucu) değilse bile bir 'agnostik'(Tanrının ve gerçeğin bilinemeyeceğine inanan kişi) anlamına gelir olmuştur.

Felsefede ise Akılcılık sözcüğünün anlamı, bunun hemen hemen tam tersidir.Bu farkın nedeni şudur: Tarih boyunca filozofların çok ilgilendiği ana sorunlardan birisi:bilginizi nasıl elde ederiz ve bilginin gerçekçiliği nedir? sorusu olmuştur. Geniş anlamıyla bu sorunun felsefe tarihinde iki yanıtı vardır ve bunlardan birisi akılcı yanıttır.
